Dellacqua hits her stride in Perth

Casey Dellacqua has beaten American Meghann Shaughnessy 6-3 6-4 in 61 minutes at the Hopman Cup.

The 23-year-old raced through the first set in 25 minutes but slumped to a 3-0 deficit in the second as Shaughnessy, still clearly hampered by her troublesome knee, found her rhythm.

But Dellacqua, who landed 100 per cent of her second serves, reeled off six of the next seven games to secure the victory.

“The last few matches I haven’t come out with a win but I feel like I’m finally starting to hit the ball better,” Dellacqua said after the match.

“I’m disappointed I haven’t been able to help Lleyton out a bit more in my singles but I’m happy to have a win today.

“It’s given me a little bit more confidence for the next few weeks leading up to the Australian Open.”

Lleyton Hewitt suffered his first setback since returning from a hip injury, losing to American James Blake in straight sets.

Hewitt, who posted tough three-set wins over Nicolas Kiefer and Dominik Hrbaty earlier in the tournament, was outgunned by a classy Blake 6-2 6-2 in just 60 minutes.

World No.10 Blake’s win levelled the tie at 1-1 after Casey Dellacqua defeated Meghann Shaughnessy earlier on Thursday.

Hewitt, whose world ranking slipped to 70 after spending almost five months out of the game, appeared sluggish in his third singles match of the tournament and was troubled by an ear complaint.

In the other group A encounter, the Slovak Republic leads Germany 1-0 after Dominika Cibulkova defeated Sabine Lisicki 7-6(3) 6-4 in 91 minutes.

The winner of the tie will reach Friday’s final, with Australia and the US unable to qualify.
