Casey Dellacqua will have surgery on her injured left shoulder on Monday and is expected to be out of tennis until at least the middle of the year.

Dellacqua will travel to Melbourne for a shoulder arthroscopy by one of Australia’s leading shoulder surgeons, Mr Greg Hoy.

After experiencing chronic soreness, which she has endured since Wimbledon last year, Dellacqua continued to have problems in the Dubai this week despite having remodelled her service action during the summer.

“I wanted to try everything I could before I under went surgery,” Dellacqua said today.

“I have had significant pain in my shoulder since midway through last year and I have lost a lot of the power in my arm as a result.

“I am obviously disappointed that the different treatment options I have tried in an effort to avoid surgery over the last six months have not worked but the most important thing now is to rectify the problem and to be pain free.”

Dellacqua, currently ranked 88th in the world, will miss the Optus Australian Fed Cup team’s clash against Switzerland in April as well as the French Open. Her Wimbledon campaign could also be in doubt as she is not expected to return to tennis until the middle of the year.

“I am upset I will not be able to join the girls in the World Group II Play-off in April but the current team is one of the strongest we have had in Australia for the last few years and I am sure that they will pull together and have success.”
