Casey is the first to admit that her first-round singles match against clean-striking Serbian Bojana Jovanovski didn’t end as planned yesterday, but the popular Australian is buoyant about her prospects this summer.

Despite having a day off, Dellacqua ventured to the Queensland Tennis Centre to take part in the inaugural Kids Tennis Day, an day Dellacqua describes as “Good for the event and good for tennis as a sport.”

Dellacqua signed dozens of autographs for fans who queued in the hot Queensland sun to meet the bubbly West Australian.

“It’s nice when we’re in Australia, being an Australian player to be able to give back to the community and obviously the people that come and support us. It’s only 15 minutes of my day and it means the world to them and that’s all that matters,” she says.

Dellacqua’s last major tournament was the US Open in September. Since then she has found form on the Australian Pro Tour, winning six events back to back.

“I’ve obviously played really well at the lower levels but now it’s about me stepping up and start playing with these girls,” she explains.

“Yesterday, playing against someone that’s 50 in the world, I’ve got a few things I need to work on. I didn’t necessarily play badly, there’s just a few things that I need to improve on before Hobart and the Australian Open and then hopefully I’ll be able to hit my peak and win those matches that I know I’m capable of.”

But before catching a flight to Hobart, Dellacqua still has the Brisbane doubles event with rising teenager Ashleigh Barty.

“I’m excited about playing with Ash, she’s obviously a very good player and I know she can play some quite good doubles, so I’m sure we’ll play really well tomorrow.”

Dellacqua and Barty will take on top seeds Natalie Grandin and Vladmira Uhlirova.
