Casey back on track in Osaka

After dropping three of four matches since the US Open, Casey Dellacqua has returned to the winners circle at the HP Japan Women’s Open in Osaka.

The Western Australian needed three sets to subdue plucky Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm, requiring two hours and 13 minutes to progress to the second round.

Having lost her last three singles matches - in Guangzhou, Tokyo and Beijing qualifying respectively - Dellacqua’s 6-3 3-6 6-4 win over the 42-year-old Date-Krumm set up a second round bout with Kai-Chen Chang of Taiwan, who upset No.3 seed Christina McHale in straight sets.

Dellacqua took the first set against the world No.103 but struggled to take her chances in the second, converting just one of seven break point opportunities and allowing the former world No.4 to level the match.

In the final set, Dellacqua broke serve early and maintained her advantage for the remainder of the match.

Dellacqua and Chang have never before met.
