Casey exits Brussels
Australia’s Casey Dellacqua put up a fight but ultimately lost to Ayumi Morita of Japan in the second round of the Brussels Open on Wednesday.
After racing through the opening set, the 26-year-old from Perth lost the next two as Morita finished on top, 1-6 6-0 7-5.
Despite the singles loss, Dellacqua is still playing in the doubles with countrywoman Anastasia Rodionova. The pair next face second-seeded Polish duo Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska.
Dellacqua will next travel to Paris knowing her “second career” is on track. Earlier this week Dellacqua pulled off her first win over a top 20 player since 2008 when she upset Shahar Peer in the opening round.
The West Australian is currently ranked No.429 in the world, but was the recipient of a reciprocal wildcard from Tennis Australia, which gives her entry into the main draw of the second Grand Slam tournament of the year. It will be the first major Dellacqua has played since Wimbledon last year.
Dellacqua’s best singles result is a third-round appearance in 2008 and she was a finalist in the doubles the same year.
