Casey to make her Hopman Cup debut
Casey Dellacqua will make her Hopman Cup debut in front of her home crowd at Perth’s Burswood Dome against Germany’s Sabine Lisicki on Monday 5 January.Dellacqua told caseydellacqua.com.au that she was very excited to be playing in Perth at the Hopman Cup and was equally looking forward to sharing the court with Lleyton Hewitt.
“I’ve watched him play a lot over the years and he’s a quality player, so hopefully I can do my part in the women’s singles and hopefully he can get some wins [too].”
While the pair hasn’t played doubles together before, the left-handed–right-handed combination could give the Australians an advantage over the opposition.
Their first-up opponents, Lisicki and Nicolas Kiefer, have not had a great deal of Hopman Cup experience. Only Kiefer has contested the event once, in 2006.
Lisicki, ranked 57 in the world, made her first WTA Tour final in Tashkent in 2008 and the quarterfinals at Cincinatti. She also reached the third round at Australian Open 2008.
Hewitt will be making his fourth appearance at the event he last played in 2004 with the recently retired Alicia Molik.
The fourth-seeded Australians are in Group A and will face the Slovak Republic (Dominika Cibulkova and Dominik Hrbaty) on Tuesday 6 January, and the USA (Serena Williams and James Blake) on Thursday 8 January in their round-robin matches.
The final between the winners from Group A and B will be played on Friday 9 January at 6:00 pm.
