Casey v Sam set for third round

Casey Dellacqua has continued her good form as she transitions to grass, winning her second straight match in Birmingham to set up a third-round showdown with fellow Aussie Sam Stosur.

Seeded 16th at the WTA Premier event, Dellacqua, saw off American Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 6-3 on Wednesday in just over an hour.

The result equals her career-best result in at the Edgbaston Priory Club; she reached the final 16 in 2012.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Stosur beat Christina McHale 6-1 6-3 in just one hour and five minutes.

Stosur and Dellacqua, Australia’s top two ranked players and the country’s leading Fed Cup representatives, will meet for the first time on the WTA Tour.

It’s a remarkable stat given both have enjoyed long careers at the elite level; they did meet twice on the Australian Pro Tour – in 2002 and 2003 – with Dellacqua winning both encounters.

The match guarantees one Australian will progress to the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon tune-up for the first time since Alicia Molik in 2004.
