Dellacqua gets new year bonus
Aussie favourite Casey Dellacqua will continue on the comeback trail from injury at next month’s Medibank International Sydney after receiving a wildcard from tournament organisers today.
The West Australian joins former world No. 1 Justine Henin as the second women’s wildcard recipient at the January 10 to 16 event, with two more Sony Ericsson WTA Tour wildcards still to be awarded.
Dellacqua, winner of the recent Australian Open Wildcard Play-off, said she is anticipating some tough competitive matches in Sydney, where nine of the world’s top 10 women are confirmed to play.
“After missing so many months with injury I am really excited to be playing competitively and I am looking forward to continuing my comeback at the Medibank International Sydney,” Dellacqua said.
“The field there is always incredibly tough and there is never an easy match, but I am feeling fit and ready to challenge the top women in Sydney.”
Fed Cup Coach and national selector David Taylor said “Casey showed us at the Australian Open Wildcard Play-off earlier this month that she is capable of some good form.
“By winning that event, she well and truly earned this wildcard and I think the more matches she can get against such elite company the better for her.”
Tournament Director Craig Watson said Dellacqua is a deserving recipient of the wildcard and a popular addition to the women’s field.
“Casey has had a tough year with injuries and she has clearly been working very hard to get back into peak form, so we are delighted to be able to offer her a wildcard into the event,” Watson said.
“She could face some tricky opposition with the likes of Serena Williams, Dinara Safina and Justine Henin among those in the stunning field.”
“With Casey and also Sam Stosur in our line-up, the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre crowds will be right behind the Aussie girls all week.”
Dellacqua, who missed most of the 2009 season with a recurring shoulder injury, will make her Grand Slam comeback at Australian Open 2010 after winning the Wildcard Play-off.
The 24 year old won six consecutive matches and defeated Olivia Rogowska from match point down in the final set to secure a wildcard for the first Grand Slam of the year.
Three men’s wildcards and one women’s wildcard for the Medibank International Sydney are still to be announced.
Dellacqua joins Williams, Safina, Henin, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Caroline Wozniacki, defending champion Elena Dementieva and Stosur in the star-studded women’s field for the 2010 event, while the men’s line-up features the likes of Lleyton Hewitt, Gael Monfils, Tomas Berdych and Marcos Baghdatis.
Tickets to the Medibank International Sydney 2010 are on sale now through Ticketek and can be purchased online at www.ticketek.com.au or 1300 888 104.
The Medibank International Sydney will be held at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre from Sunday 10 January to Saturday 16 January 2010.
