Doing the hard yards
I’ve been in Sydney training with Nathan Martin and his wife, Giselle, doing heaps of fitness work. I just started hitting about three weeks ago, which is pretty cool because I haven’t had a hit for about four months.
It’s been a fairly long time, but it was good to get back out on court and make sure that I’m heading in the right direction with my shoulder. At the moment all is going well and the shoulder feels great and I’m really enjoying being back on court, even though it’s not much at this stage.
I’m doing lots of different types of fitness work. Obviously at first I couldn’t use that much of my upper body, so I did lots of running up stairs and sand dunes. Since I’ve been able to use my arm a bit I’ve been doing some weights in the gym and lots of different work. The variety is good because I’m doing two fitness sessions per day during the week and it’s great to wake up knowing I’m doing something different rather than the same thing all the time.
Over the next few weeks I’m really going to increase the amount of hitting that I’m doing. At the moment I’m only able to hit once and then have a few days off and then hit again.
I was in so much pain for a year with my shoulder, it was really affecting me mentally and I guess I was just trying to get through, but now I feel really good – my shoulder’s fixed and I’ve actually had the time to be able to put some real effort into my fitness. The fitness has been the focus and I feel like I’m definitely in the best shape I’ve been in and I’ve still got some more time to go, so hopefully that will keep improving.
I watched a fair bit of the French and Wimbledon while they were on, which was great. Giselle, Nathan and I were up watching Sam play a lot of the nights, because it was on late. It was great to see her doing so well. I also was watching Federer play every time. I’ve also been watching a lot of football as well, which has been good.
I’ll be back next week with news about what I’ve been doing off the court.
