First up win for Dellacqua at play-off
Casey Dellacqua has made a triumphant return to Melbourne Park, registering a win in her opening round-robin match in the Australian Open Wildcard Play-off.
Dellacqua surprised No.1 seed Olivia Rogowska 7-6(8) 6-0, the contest petering out after a tough first set.
Both players began on song, with a healthy crowd watching an entertaining tussle in sunny conditions on court 6.
Dellacqua needed a tiebreaker to seal the first set, claiming it by the smallest of margins, 10-8.
Rogowska’s confidence began to crumble in the second as she sent a string of errors spraying out of the court; she managed to win only a handful of points for the set.
Dellacqua, who endured an injury-frustrated 2009, said she was happy with her start to the Wildcard Play-off.
“It was exciting to be back out there, be competitive and have a win,” she said.
“I was enjoying getting court time, and that’s just what this week’s going to be about – getting matches and playing a lot of tennis.
“But sometimes you just want to win and get off the court, so it was good.”
