Raising funds for Research into Cystic Fibrosis

I’m part of a committee of volunteers who annually host a Melbourne Cup Lunch to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis.

My cousin Kaila, has Cystic Fibrosis. She is 28 and in late 2012 after waiting two and half years she finally received a new set of lungs.

Kaila has been doing amazingly well but the threat of rejection and complications is always present.

Everyone who knows Kaila has been so inspired by her gutsy and positive attitude to life during the most difficult circumstances and I wanted to honour her courage in some meaningful way.

Sadly, on Friday 3rd October Kaila attended another funeral for a special 25 year old friend who also had CF. Nicky Dewar received a double lung transplant at Royal Perth Hospital four years ago. Tragically, following a bout of pneumonia Nicky was diagnosed with chronic rejection and on Saturday 27th September she passed away at RPH.

The Committee also raises funds for the Glenn Brown Memorial Grant. Glenn Brown was a friend of Kaila’s, with CF, who she met during her regular stays at Princess Margaret Hospital as a child. Kaila and her family have very special memories of Glenn. Tragically, Glenn passed away at Princess Margaret Hospital when he was only 15.

Before Glenn died he said to his family and friends that he was scared that he would be forgotten. The Glenn Brown Memorial Grant has been established to make sure that this never happens. The Glenn Brown Memorial Grant has been established with the Lung Institute of Western Australia to provide local researchers funds to better understand and treat cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis.

The fundraising efforts focus on a Melbourne Cup Lunch to be held this year at Fraser’s Restaurant on Tuesday 4th November 2014. It is attended by up to 300 people and your help would be acknowledged. This is the twelfth year of fundraising and we are always looking for new sponsors and people to donate to this very worthwhile cause.

How can you help?

We are sourcing prizes big and small for the silent auction, the voucher board and the Tombola. We would love to have any items you would be willing to donate to mix up our prizes.

Any help, however big or small, will be gratefully accepted.

I understand it is not always possible to support every cause but if we are fortunate to be on the receiving end of a donation we would be delighted.

Thank you for taking the time to read my request.
