Wuhan victory sees Dellacqua face Wozniacki
Casey Dellacqua has booked a spot in the third round of the WTA Wuhan Open and a date with US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki following an epic three-set win over Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
In a match lasting just under three hours, Dellacqua, at a career high number 27 in the world, fell behind 3-1 in the first set, reeled off four straight games before scoring a chance to serve for the set. Despite missing the opportunity, she clinched it in a tense tiebreak.
Although down 5-3 in the second, Pavlyuchenkova hit back to take the set 7-6, before Dellacqua proved too strong and steady in the third, running out a 7-6(7) 6-7(5) 6-1 winner.
Wozniacki, the tournament’s eighth seed, awaits in the next round after the Dane was a three-set winner over Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro.
“I really wanted to finish the year off strong just the way I started. I was really happy to have that win today against a tough opponent and still be playing in Wuhan,” Dellacqua said.
“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to play Caroline. I’ve actually never played her before so it’s always nice in your career to say you’ve played all the best players and it’ll be a big challenge for me, but I just have to play my game and enjoy the challenge, and see how I go.”
